Tyrian • Gradius V is the most impressive and frantic fun shmup that I've ever had the honor to behold. You mean its not part of the official series? Any number of Konami's Gradius or Parodius games would totally rock the Live Arcade scene. I plan to continue to explore this genre on the NES. But for those of us who are more interested in collecting physical media, it should be noted that the PSP is also a great system to showcase various retro compilations. Ships at 3. This version is completely different from the MSX Gradius 2 mentioned above. Presented by BulletMagnet Note from racketboy: Once again, it’s a pleasure to have BulletMagnet back to guide us through another blockbuster shmup library. Kobayashi: He was always saying we needed to take on new challenges. Love those games. His guides to the Sega Saturn and Playstation Shmup Libraries are required reading for those looking to explore the genre. And the font is large! But I think it was worth the trouble, because it turned out to be a very impressive stage. Syvalion • A Gradius VI and/or Axelay 2 would be godly for me. Shumps! A new space jet 3d, where you can select your spaceship and upgrade or customize alot of weapons, shiled, or magnet! His name is meant to be read “Obamu.” In English, I believe it means “abnormal shape.” 5 “The Original Visions of Ultimate Monster” was added later. Gradius Portable Guidebook Shikigami no Shiro • Isobe: The first thing we stumbled over was how to divide the 4 options between 2 players. Chigasaki: Using the PSX’s processing speed, I experimented with a slightly different method with the VRAM for that terrain effect. Thunder Force • As I got more and more information that the new Konami shooter would be anime-based, I was a little skeptical. A Gradius VI … Isobe: The prelude Kuchuusen melody also changes for the second loop. I’d love to work on a development project like this again… I want to make a new Gradius game, with this staff! (laughs) Especially when comes at you and traps you with the needle bullet pattern. Gradius V was made by Treasure and every shooter release after that was just a compilation of older games. It doesn't have a checkpoint system, and you don't lose all your power-ups on death (you can pick up the multiples dropped on death). Along with the Cave STG History interviews, it represents the gold standard in game developer interviews. Then you have to find the right difficulty balance for them. Yamazaki: I think it turned out to be a really cool final stage because of that. Gradius Rebirth allows for a wide variety of control methods including using the Wii Remote on its side, the Nunchuk, the Classic Controller, or even a Gamecube controller if you're so inclined. I cracked up. Listed are all of the games developed and/or published by Konami. TwinBee • Etrian Darkness. I enjoyed it overall, despite it being pretty unforgiving. Kobayashi: The forking path ended up being featured only in this stage, but we actually wanted to do that in other stages, too. Yamazaki, you sure put a lot of care into the way your bosses exploded. Isobe: We decided on the Gaiden title first, and the story came later. Gradius 2. Jan 11, 2020 #64 I enjoy all types of the shmups. Just “Volcano” and so forth. There are several gameplay elements that are common to almost all the Gradius games. Robotron 2084 - earliest manic intensity. Isobe: The hardest to make was the disruptor. skermac (Topic Creator) 7 years ago #3. Gradius V (PS2): easily the best shmup on the system; Crimzon clover (PC): definitely a bullet hell, but the easiest level setting does a really good job at introducing new players (imo) Eschatos (pc/xbox 360 jap (region free)): not far from a bullet hell but I wouldn't consider it as one. The current date and time is December 13, 2020 22:23. We didn’t have to follow a “kill the player in the 2nd stage!” arcade philosophy (laughs), and we could pace the difficulty in a more balanced way, with the goal of progressively raising the player’s skills. (laughs). Gradius is consistently good and probably my second choice. Gradius Collection is a collected revival of one of the great classics in side-scrolling blast-em-ups. Defender • Glimlocker. During the development the internal organ stage was 2nd, and the graveyard stage was 7th. (everyone laughs) Well, this was an homage to Trigon, so I definitely needed to have “Tri” in there somewhere. We did a lot of changes like that. (laughs) You know, in Life Force the Lord British ship had a different power-up order. Kobayashi: For me, Gradius was a game I had played a ton as a kid, so in that respect the pressure was immense. Gradius グラディウス外伝, romanized as "Gradius Gaiden", is part of the Gradius series of shmup games. Gradius V is probably my all-time favourite shmup, and it does fall into the middle ground. Whatever the story, these games don’t come out. It took me several evenings to beat it. 2 I know that’s a taboo word… (laughs), Yamazaki: The idea for enemies that come from behind in the very beginning was taken from the MSX Gradius 2. Fantastic shmup! 3 678 9 . / "?" (laughs) Here too, we knew we wanted to pay homage to Crab from Gradius II, but this particular design wasn’t decided on till very late. (everyone laughs), Isobe: Yeah, it exudes feelings of liberation and relief… “Ah, my work is done!”. Isobe: The next boss, Heavy Ducker, was created by me. In many different ways it was a memorable project for me. The final boss theme, The Justice Ray Part.3 is also on the "Broken Thunder" soundtrack for Thunder Force VI. Isobe: Also, the Falchion β Auto-Aiming weapon was my idea. Isobe: By the way, regarding the Falchion β… after we completed Gradius Gaiden, I learned of the existence of the FDS game Falsion. Raiden • Isobe: The previous high speed stages in the Gradius series had a lot of starting and stopping, and some felt this took away from the sense of speed. I also really like the flashy explosion when this guys dies. I tell people this work represents my heart and soul. In the 2006 French documentary film Japon: Histoire Du Shooting Game produced by CanalSat's GameOnechannel, senior producer Osamu Kasai explained that because of limited resourc… Gradius IV is a shmup from the Gradius series released in 1999 for the arcades and PlayStation 2 as a bundle.. - 12 Xenon Spaceship to customize, take care with the asteroids! Yamazaki: And of course we were very conscious of the fact that this was a console game we were developing. Yamazaki: What, really?! Some were saying the standard shot should also be affected, but it was like, “then there won’t be a game to play!” (everyone laughs) The enemy shots do curve, but lasers are unaffected. It was simply fan service. Geometry Wars • - 6 Final Boss in R-Type galaxy wars. Early in the development we asked “What shall we do for a volcano stage this time?”, and people were like “I guess we have to put one in, its Gradius after all.” (laughs) We thought of doing the usual volcanic eruptions, but since this was the PSX, we definitely wanted to revise it with some kind of background or terrain effect. (laughs), Yamazaki: It was really fun to create. Jan 11, 2020 #64 I enjoy all types of the shmups. At first we made it that whoever got them first kept them, but that way the more experienced player always won. (everyone laughs), Isobe: Yeah, the green plant stage itself was first in MSX Gradius 2, also. Star Soldier • Oct 29, 2017 4,297 UK. I’m not sure I was successful for every stage though. It also features prominently in the original soundtrack as a bonus track. (laughs), Isobe: I can’t help but laugh everytime I see it. I remember he first went through 3 separate transformations. Its different, but something seems off about it… well, either way, its easy to read! Isobe: We made it so only the player ship’s missile is affected by the gravity. My destiny is to fill my momma's shoes. - 60 Levels with space fleets in Gradius. My guess is that Gradius VI will appear on the 360 and PS3 in 2010. Xeno Fighters R • Kobayashi Takayuki: Game system design, programming for stage 1/2/3 enemies, stage 1/2 bosses, Laser Tetran, Neo Big Core, Sol, Heaven’s Gate, and others. I just beat myself first SHMUP, Twin Eagle: Revenge Joe’s Brother. After our last fling with the genre on normal retail with Gradius V on PS2 and Ikaruga on GameCube, the shmup hasn’t even been putting out its usual schtick: Japan-exclusive releases trickling in torturously low supply into American ports, either by genuine low demand or disingenuous manufactured rarity. A beautiful looking game (this along with Ikaruga are my favorite looking shooters), fantastic boss battles, and it’s a joy to play by yourself or with a friend.
